Generous Donation Brings Faster, More Comfortable Colorectal Assessments to Northampton General

Thanks to one of our generous donors, Northampton General Hospital’s (NGH) Integrated Surgery Outpatients team can now provide quicker and more comfortable assessments for people with bowel and back passage concerns.

Thanks to one of our generous donors, Northampton General Hospital’s (NGH) Integrated Surgery Outpatients team can now provide quicker and more comfortable assessments for people with bowel and back passage concerns.

The new equipment was funded by the kindness of a single donor, who gave in memory of her late husband, treated at NGH before his passing last year. While she wishes to remain anonymous, both Northamptonshire Health Charity and NGH staff have expressed their sincere thanks for this thoughtful gift, which will enhance care and improve outcomes for patients for years to come.

The new system, called the LumenEye X1 Digital Endoscope, enables staff to deliver a more efficient, patient-focused colorectal service by offering advanced diagnostics at the first consultation. It allows clinicians to assess symptoms immediately, reducing the need for formal endoscopy and helping patients receive a diagnosis and treatment plan sooner.

This state-of-the-art equipment is transformative for our patients,

said Mr Jamil Ahmed, Consultant Robotic and Laparoscopic General and Colorectal Surgeon, and Deputy Director of Medical Education at NGH.

It reduces the need for formal endoscopy, making diagnostics faster and more comfortable. The LumenEye also supports planning rectal cancer surgeries, monitoring ‘watch and wait’ patients, and assessing long-term outcomes for IBD and pouch patients. We are profoundly grateful to our donors for this gift, which directly enhances our ability to provide cutting-edge care.

The new technology will also support future service development. One-stop anorectal clinics can now be introduced, freeing capacity in other colorectal clinics and helping reduce waiting lists. Routine use of the LumenEye could prevent thousands of unnecessary referrals, saving NHS resources and improving patient experience.
