NGH Volunteers go for gold in the Northants Business Games

Channelling the Olympian within each of them, the dedicated NGH Volunteer Services team pulled together last month and entered the Northants Business Games 2021 to raise funds for the upkeep and maintenance of their fleet of vehicles.

The volunteers at Northampton General Hospital provide a wide-range of important services supporting staff and patients and making a huge difference to patient care.

The indoor and outdoor buggy services have become a real lifeline to many people attending appointments in the hospital, helping patients to get to their appointments on time and to navigate across the large hospital site.

They also now have the discharge car too.

The Northants Business Games is an annual event where 20+ workplace teams come together for a fun, action-packed evening of competition and camaraderie.

Each team competes in a variety of activities, from volleyball, archery and bowls, to disc golf and horse showjumping.

Facing the challenge this year were Head of Volunteer Services, Emma Wimpress along with Michelle, Lauren, Megan, Matthew, Andy, Paul and Jack.

Lee, Bev and Amy were on hand as coaches to keep TeamNGH fit and ready for action!

After a bit of a shaky start the team won both their games of volleyball before donning a bow and arrow for a go at becoming the next Robin Hood in the archery event.

Disc Golf tested the throwing skills of our athletes as they each took on the 6-holes having to throw a disc down the fairway to finally end up in a raised hole.

"The lowest score of the event was 17 and one of our team managed 18," said Michelle Barnes, Deputy Head of Volunteer Services, "The rest of us were in the early 20s." Next, it was time to saddle up for Horse Showjumping - a relay event on a hobby horse.

Points were deducted for any of the jumps that riders knocked down but gained for the greatest performance given, be that a dramatic fall or making horse-type noises.

It certainly looks like much fun was had by TeamNGH in terms of performance in this event and we're so grateful they were able to capture some awesome videos for you to see this first-hand.

Our team did pretty well in the Bowls event which they took part in individually.

At the end of the games out of about 15 teams, they came away in 7th place.

A huge well done to all who took part.

They will always be number one with us and all those they support across the hospital!

You can still make a donation to their Just Giving page which will help with the maintenance of the vehicles, which provide such a crucial patient transport service.
