On Wednesday 16th August, the Mayor and Mayoress of Northampton made a special visit to the Northampton General Hospital Museum and Archives, discovering a remarkable yet little-known treasure within the heart of the community.
Despite its historical significance, many residents are unaware of this invaluable resource that chronicles the hospital’s long-standing service to Northamptonshire.
The museum aims to preserve the history of Northampton General Hospital and the NHS in general and makes it accessible to all.
The museum’s collection, which dates back to the 18th century, offers visitors a unique opportunity to explore a wide range of historical artifacts, including over 2,850 books and journals on medical history, as well as portraits, plaques, photographs, press cuttings, letters, and medical equipment.
Not only is it a place of learning and discovery for the public but also a vital resource for academics and students, who regularly use it for research.
The archive, maintained by a dedicated team of volunteers, is entirely funded by donations.
It’s open to the public on Wednesday mornings from 8:30 am to 1:30 pm.
To ensure the continued preservation and accessibility of this important collection, the Northampton General Hospital NHS Trust is calling on the community to visit the museum and consider making a donation.
Every contribution helps support this entirely volunteer-run initiative, ensuring that the history of the hospital and its connection to the local community is safeguarded for future generations.
The Mayor shared his excitement about the visit, highlighting the rich history on display and the fascinating stories behind the hospital’s evolution and its impact on the local community.
“The Northampton General Hospital Museum and Archives is a hidden gem that more people should know about and visit,” said the Mayor.
“It’s a rare and valuable resource, not just for those interested in medical history but for anyone who wants to understand the deep connections between our hospital and the local community.”
“We rely on the generosity of our community to keep this important resource available,” added Julia Corps, one of the Museum volunteers said.
“By visiting, learning, and donating, you can help us continue to share the stories of our hospital and its role in Northampton’s history.”
