Babies and young people with complex needs, along with their families, can now benefit from an enhanced hygiene facility at Northampton General Hospital, following the opening of the new Reef Retreat Bathroom. The project was funded by donations from our supporters.
Located on Paddington Ward at Northampton General Hospital, the bathroom gives young patients and their families better access to facilities that support dignified, appropriate personal care.
Hospital visits can be challenging for any child, but for young patients with complex needs, such as those who have limited mobility or learning difficulties, everyday tasks like washing and changing require the right equipment and a thoughtfully designed space. A welcoming environment with suitable facilities helps reduce stress for both patients and families.
The refreshed space now includes a purpose-designed changing table alongside the existing ceiling track hoist, enabling save moving and handling and staff and families meet the patient’s needs with dignity and comfort.
Bright and engaging wall art has also been introduced to create a calmer, more child-friendly atmosphere, further easing anxiety during hospital visits.
The improvements were made possible through a Dragon’s Den style event held at Northampton General Hospital, where teams across the hospital pitched ideas for projects that go beyond core NHS provision. Successful proposals received charitable funding to bring their ideas to life, helping staff develop solutions that enhance both patient care and the hospital environment.
Nicola Hunt, Senior Health Care Assistant on Paddington Ward, and her team who applied for the funding said,
“We are grateful to everyone who supports Northamptonshire Health Charity. The funding has enabled improvements that make a real difference for children with complex needs by providing appropriate equipment and a suitable environment for personal care. These enhancements mean the space now better meets patient and family needs.”
Investments like this one show how charitable funding can shape spaces that reflect compassion and respect, giving children with complex needs and their families a more comfortable, dignified hospital experience.
