Donations supporting young people with diabetes

Thanks to your support we have recently been able to fund two initiatives that benefit children and young people with diabetes.

The Escape Room event for older teens was a great success and thanks to funding from the charity, the Paediatrics Diabetes Team (pictured above) based at Northampton General Hospital, will be able to hold another such event next year.

Feedback from the team:
The teenagers accessing the diabetes service can be a tricky age group to engage with and social activities such as an escape room gives them a chance to meet others that also live with this condition.

Type 1 diabetes can make a young person feel different and like the odd one out so the aim for this social activity is to provide peer support to these young people to show them they are not alone.

This sort of scenario gives the diabetes nurses a chance to see the young patients in a fun environment and build a good working relationship with them to help keep them engaged with the service and building their confidence in managing their own diabetes for adult life in the future”
The second event funded by the charity involved delicious pizza.

Lucy Whiteside, Specialist Children’s Diabetes Dietician said:
The Pizza event was a great opportunity for our young people to get together.

Not only was it also a peer support event, we were also able to find out what is important to these young people which helps us build rapport with their families.

As with most of our events there is a small element of education.

Pizza can be a challenging meal to manage for someone with Type 1 Diabetes.

Although they can eat ‘what they like’ within reason, some foods cause high blood glucose levels even if the correct doses of insulin are given.

This was a great opportunity for the young people with Type 1 to improve their independence with managing these problematic meals.

With out the money donated to Northamptonshire Health Charity, these events would not be possible, thank you so much.”
