A huge thank you to Jane Bayliss and Emily Rootes for raising over £600 via tubes of Smarties in aid of the Talbot Butler emergency assessment bay.
“It’s like a second home…” explains both Jane Bayliss and Emily Rootes when visiting Talbot Butler ward this week.
As a patient, Emily has stayed on the ward many times, while Jane’s mum has been through the emergency assessment bay while undergoing treatment.
While staying in hospital a little while ago and naturally feeling quite bored, Emily asked best friend, Jane to go and buy her some Smarties.
Then the idea formed: why not give tubes to family and friends and ask for them to be returned full of coins for charity.
That’s exactly what Jane and Emily did, never quite believing they would raise as much money as they did.
“More and more people just wanted to get involved.”
As well as friends and family, work colleagues requested Smarties tubes to be able to take part and help raise money for the emergency assessment bay on Talbot Butler Ward.
“We were getting some funny looks when we kept going back to shops and buying so many tubes of Smarties,” explained Emily.
“Some people called me up and offered to donate money without having to eat Smarties too”.
When they had received all the tubes back full of money, the counting was a rather big but very worthwhile mission.
Some people even popped bank notes inside some tubes.
They were so shocked, albeit pleasantly, when they counted out the £603.75 that they had collected!
It appears that Smarties really do have the answer…
Jane and Emily came in this week to present their wonderful donation to Emma Cuthbert and Paula Wadhams in the emergency assessment bay.
Thank you both so much, for fundraising with such an interesting and unique idea!
